Dellows in Print

Here is a selection of the best books and magazines to get to read about your favourite car. In general, of the early magazines, the American ones have better quality pictures and more of them. Most books are relatively expensive and only have cursory and often incorrect information so unless you are very keen, my advice is to leave them alone. The exception is the Motor Guide to Makes and Models by David Culshaw.

Where the title of the publication is highlighted, there is a link to a copy of that publication's front page. This is to act as an aid to recognition if you want to buy copies at an autojumble or on E-Bay. If you haven't tried E-Bay, then you must.

Australian Motor Sports	AUS	February	1952	4 page (A5) article on the Mk2 Dellow with 2 B/W pics of an unregistered and hence unidentified Dellow. Probably one of the three shipped out to John Crouch Motors in October 1951. Coincidentally a photo of the late John Crouch in this mag.

Model Maker	UK	October	1952	2 1/2 page article on modelling the Mk2 Dellow. Somewhat out of scale but looks more or less like a Dellow
British Motor Cars 1952 Pub. Foulis	UK	October	1952	Illustrated directory of SMMT manufacturers products in hardback by John F. Speed. 10" x 7.5" format. 2 pages on the Dellow with 2 B/W pics of JNP400 in Mk3 guise plus tabulated spec of Mk2 and Mk3
The Motor	UK	November 5	1952	1 page article on Dellow Models for 1953. B/W pics of Mk2 & Mk3. JNP400 shown in its new 4 seater guise. Useful technical details given for both models.
British Cars 1953 PC Publications	UK		1953	An unassuming little book by Peter Chambers with a selection of cars including the Dellow with factory supplied b/w pictures of JNP400 as a Mk3 and probably EOP992 Mk1. Detailed specifications in the back for Mks 2,3&4 but there are mistakes in the data.
The Motor	UK	April 28	1954	2 page article B/W on the 1954 Circuit of Ireland Trial won by W.J.M.Glover in a Dellow Mk2 PZ808. One pic of the winner (rear quarter B/W)

ABC Sports Cars Pub. Ian Allan	UK		1957	Tiny little spotters type book by Albert Douglas with 1 B&W pic of XMC333 on the road. Dates from just after the sale of Dellow Motors, circa 1957
The Worlds Racing Cars and Sports Cars	UK/USA		1958	By Douglas Armstrong of Sports Cars Illustrated. This small one page article refers mainly to the Mk6 and has a good B&W pic of the mk6 - one of the first I have seen. A bit of history but nothing on earlier dellows
The Motor Guide to Makes and Models	UK		1959	Guide to all uk cars 1945-56. good section on Dellow with data on all models. No pics. This is the “book” to get published by Temple Press Author David Culshaw.
The Sports Car Pocket Book. Pub. Batsford	UK		1961	Pocket book by Bill Boddy published by Batsford. A lovely little book with 250+ pages of sports cars. Dellow figures on one page only with a b/w pic of Tony Marsh in LWP757
A History of Sports Cars Pub. Spring Books	UK		1970	A Georgano book which again repeats the myth of the fibreglass bodies, but this book contains an action shot of XMC333 and a colour pic of Peter LeCouteur's late Mk2 RXN506
Mayfair	UK		C1972	Girlie magazine from the seventies with a colour feature by Bill Boddy 5 pages and 10 pics of mk1, 2, 3. You'll need to keep this one in the bike shed.
The Autocar	UK	June 1	1972	4 page Colour article on Lands End Trial featuring Dellows mk1 & 2 9 pics in colour, 5 of which are Dellows. good action pic of ECL 787 on Bluehills
A Source Book of Racing and Sports Cars Pub. Ward Locke	UK		1973	A Georgano compilation with 1 B&W pic of EJN495. Georgano always seemed to get it wrong, claiming dellows were available with fibreglas bodies and Ford Consul engines!
British Sports Cars Since the War. Pub. Batsford	UK		1974	Small entry in a book by Martyn Watkins with 1 b/w pic of ??J 900
British Cars of the Early Fifties 1950 - 1954. Pub. Warne	UK		1975	An Olyslager Auto Library book with Mk1 and Mk3 entries. Small write ups but with unusual brochure type pics in B&W which I have not seen before
Practical Classics	UK	August	1981	5 page article with 13 B/W pics of Mark Hayward's car EVG 28 trialling
An Encyclopaedia of European Sports & GT Cars Pub. Haynes	UK		1981	A substantial book by Graham Robson with good quality pics. only one of a dellow though it is a rear quarter shot of an early Mk1 probably EGJ280 but clearly shown is the dashboard layout. Unfortunately, there is a reference to fibreglass bodied Mk6.

Recent History	UK	Spring	1987	8 page A5 format article with 10 B/W pics. A super article by Geoff May with history, anecdotes etc. Development of JNP 400 from mk2 to mk3 and finally to mk4

Your Classic	UK	June	1990	A group test with some unlikely contenders to compare with the Dellow. However some quite nice shots of JRX 126 a ohv converted Mk1
A to Z of Sports Cars since 1945	UK		1991	quite a nice book for the coffee table with 2 b/w pics of Mk1 and 5 quite good, well informed write up. This book appears quite cheaply on E-bay, Author Mike Lawrence.

Classic British Cars Pub. Abbeydale Press	UK		2000	Authors Michael Ware & Graham Robson have included 2 pages about Dellows with a nice colour picture of a Mk1. New issue 2006 which is still on sale.
Classic & Sportscar	UK	November	2000	4 page colour article comparing the mk2 Dellow with the Liege. 6 colour pics of MLJ 928
British Car	Holland	circa	2001	4 colour pages of Mk2 owned by Jan Louwe, good colour pics with lots of detail of a well restored car. In Dutch unfortunately but I have an english translation and pdf of the article. Contact me if you would like a copy.

The Village	UK	February March April November	2003 2003 2003 2003	A village magazine for Alvechurch embellished with the pen of Jim Harvey in a series of articles in full colour covering the history of the Dellow. You will need to track down the Feb, March, April and November 2003 editions.
